I've been taking on small writing assignments from people.
Zack's task: a koan.
Below are my two attempts.

"Share your ice cream with me."
"I have no ice cream. The bowl is empty."
"You can give me all your ice cream, but you can't make that bowl empty."

"I tried to write a koan.
I failed.
I gave up.
I succeeded."

Ah, the delightful emptiness of koans.

You should read Basho's haiku.

Those are beautiful. Now do a limerick! or... maybe a sestina. or perhaps just a cleverly palindromic sentence.

Which one, Joe-man? Which one? Others, too, must set their tasks, and then it can be your turn again.

I already have a sestina somewhere that probably needs a bit of editing, but that's not the point of this exercise. Here the plan is to get out a whole lot of things without obsessing over them, and then go back later to the bunch and proceed from there. I've never been one to handle the revision process, so this should be a shot at that.

Koan goes here, response to next entry.
One day, a young woman was sitting at her computer. One thought streched out to the world. She became two with the world. Another sprung to the left, and she was three. Again to the right and was made four. A fifth. Six. Thoughts kept arching out of her head until her thoughts covered all the world and all the ideas within. She was one with everything. She did not become enlightened.

Re: Koan goes here, response to next entry.
The above is not the koan I wrote for the excersize. The following is, and it is far from done. It is an AI koan (modeled after the ones at MIT), and as such has a definite response:

One day, Shawn approached Zack in the computing lab. Zack had been coding for 10 hours straight. Shawn asked Zack, "How do you stay focused? After a while I get scatterbrained and can no longer work." Zack pulled out a card and handed it to Shawn. Upon it was written 0x0. Shawn laughed and remarked that there was nothing written on the card.
Zack pointed to the card and Shawn then became enlightened.
